💵 Money & bills
- Check for money that’s already yours — states hold billions in unclaimed cash. Search free at MissingMoney.com or usa.gov/unclaimed-money. Claiming is always free — never pay a “finder.”
- Freeze your credit — free by law at all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion). It blocks identity thieves from opening accounts and doesn’t hurt your score. Do all three.
- Call and negotiate — internet, phone, and medical bills are often negotiable. Ask for the “retention” or “financial hardship” department — medical bills especially can be lowered or put on a $0-interest plan.
- Dial 211 before you fall behind — it connects you to local help with rent, utilities, and food.
- Use your library card — free ebooks, audiobooks, courses, and often streaming and museum passes — look up “Libby” and “Kanopy.”
- Buy the generic — store-brand groceries and over-the-counter meds are usually the same thing for less.
🏠 Home & food
- Freeze it before it dies — bread, cheese, milk, and leftovers all freeze. Label with the date.
- Store produce right — keep bananas away from other fruit (they speed up ripening); onions and potatoes apart; herbs in a glass of water.
- Clean for pennies — baking soda and white vinegar handle most kitchen and bathroom messes.
- Cook once, eat twice — batch a meal and portion it out — cheaper and faster than takeout all week.
- Photograph your stuff — a quick video walkthrough of each room makes insurance claims after theft or damage far easier.
📱 Phone & tech
- Wet phone? Skip the rice — Apple and Samsung both say don’t. Power it off, wipe it, tap out the water, and let it air-dry in a ventilated spot — no heat, no charging until it’s fully dry (can take a day).
- Turn on two-factor login — the single biggest security upgrade you can do in two minutes.
- Use a password manager — so you remember one strong password instead of reusing weak ones everywhere.
- Reverse image search — drop a photo into Google Images to check if a profile, product, or listing is fake or stolen.
- Back up your photos — turn on a free cloud backup so a lost phone doesn’t mean lost memories.
- Wipe before you sell — always factory-reset a phone or laptop before you sell, donate, or toss it.
🛡 Scams & safety
- Urgency + payment = scam — if someone pressures you to pay right now, especially with gift cards, wire, or crypto, hang up and breathe. Real agencies don’t work that way.
- Don’t click “unsubscribe” on spam — it can confirm your address is live. Mark it as junk instead.
- Verify with your own number — call the bank or company using the number on your card or their official site — never the one in the message.
- Never pay to claim a prize or refund — or “unclaimed money.” Free is free.
🩹 Health & everyday
- Set up your phone’s Medical ID + ICE contact — so responders can see allergies and reach someone without unlocking it.
- Ask for the generic prescription — same active ingredient, often a fraction of the price.
- Save the free lines — 988 (crisis), 211 (local help), 1-800-222-1222 (poison).
- Cheapest health upgrades there are — a refillable water bottle and standing up to move once an hour.
🔧 Handy fixes
- Stripped screw? Lay a wide rubber band between the screwdriver and the screw head for extra grip.
- Dropped something tiny? Stretch a sock over the vacuum nozzle and hoover the area — it catches the item without swallowing it.
- Squeaky hinge? A dab of cooking oil or a rub of bar soap quiets it.
- Label your cables — a strip of masking tape on each cord saves you every single time.
